The line to see David Anders (Blaine) and Aly Michalka (Peyton) talk iZombie with fans filled up the 8th floor of the Westin Peachtree, but we managed to get a seat third-row center. Here are our favorite questions and answers from the panel. Answers edited for brevity/clarity.
Q (for David): Which Blaine is more fun to play?
A: Zombie Blaine is definitely the most fun to play. Now that he has amnesia he’s more of a sensitive guy, but Anders said he prefers the devious Blaine in terms of actually playing the character.
Q: What do the brains on iZombie taste like, and what are they made of?
Aly: Peyton hasn’t had to eat the brains so far, so I’m not sure what they taste like.
David: They started out with, I think, a tofu-sort of recipe, but it didn’t have the consistency or look they wanted. So now the brains are made of agar, which is basically just a carrier material [it’s like gelatin], which means whatever you put on the brains is what you taste. If it’s barbecue brains, they taste like barbecue sauce.
Q: How much of the story do you know ahead of time?
Aly: we usually see the script only one or two episodes ahead at most. I like that because it keeps the character reactions authentic.
Q: If you were going to have an episode where your character swaps bodies with another character, which character would you swap with?
David: I’d probably swap with Ravi.
Aly: I think I’d swap Peyton with Blaine.
Q (for Aly): What are you most looking forward to in Season 3?
Aly: well we can’t really talk about the upcoming season specifically, but I want to know where things go with the love triangle between Peyton, Ravi and Blaine.
Q: Would you ever want to do a musical episode?
David: Absolutely. Some people talk while they walk, I sing.
Aly: It would be ok with me if we didn’t because I’ve done so much singing in the past, but it might be fun to see some of the other characters sing.
Q: What show would you like to do an iZombie crossover with?
A: Buffy. And The Walking Dead.
Q: What was it like to be cast as Blaine?
David: Well, one thing we had to do was figure out whatever this is [points] with my hair. And we had issues with the bleach, with my hair falling out. Then somebody said to call James Marsters’ people because he had white-blonde hair for Buffy, and they might know what to do. So they called and someone asked him, and he said, oh yeah, put a little Sweet N Low in the formula to neutralize some of the acid. It worked. So thanks, James!
Those are our favorite questions from Friday. And we have one more: is there a Blaine/Spike bromance in the future for iZombie?
